Is it really just a gigantic ball of burning gas? Does the gas replenish itself from some source as it burns?

No it does not replenish itself, the sun at current rate of burning should last another 5 billion years or so before dying out. All stars have a set life cycle and our sun is currently nearing ‘old age’
